Debbie Adams, Chair
Debbie is a past president of the Asheville JCC and co-founder of the Hard Lox Jewish Food festival, raising over $150k in a 5 year period for this event. An active Jewish community member, she headed the search for the JCC executive director and is also a past board member and director of fund-raising for Beth HaTephila.
Karen Hyman, Chair-Elect previously served on the Asheville JCC Board of Directors and Executive Board, was Co-Chair of Beth Ha Tephila's PTA and a member of Rabbi search committee at Beth HaTephila. Karen serves on the Development Committee at Evergreen Community Charter School and is also the reigning 'kugel queen' for the Hard Lox Food Festival held in Asheville annually. Karen directs the Physician Relations Program at Mission Hospitals.
 

Audrey Kirsch, Secretary
Audrey Kirsch has been a member of the Federation Board for years and currently serves as the organization's Secretary. She is a co-owner of Blossoms at Biltmore Park, Asheville's premier floral and event design studio. With two young boys, Audrey and her husband keep busy with involvement in their schooling at the Asheville JCC, and with their extra-curricular activities.

 
Joe Karpen, Treasurer
Active community volunteer, having served as President of Congregation Beth Ha Tephila for 4 years, and President of the Asheville Jewish Community Center for 2 years, Joe remains active in committee work for both organizations. Other current community involvement includes the Old Farmers Ball and Warren Wilson College. He is also an avid photographer, currently working on a project of Dance in Asheville
 
Pam Sugarman, Past Chair
Pam Sugarman helps people build effective nonprofit organizations. Today Pam is president of Sugarman Consulting, a firm that delivers strategy and governance consulting to nonprofits and foundations. Sample clients include the Asheville Jewish Community Center, Buncombe County Medical Society, and Cherokee Preservation Foundation. Previously Pam served on the management staff at the Georgia Center for Nonprofits and as legislative staff to three U.S. Representatives in Washington. Pam also volunteers her time and has served on boards including the WNC Jewish Federation, Hands On Atlanta, the Nonprofit Management Association, and Research Atlanta. Pam was a participant in Leadership Atlanta and was honored by Outstanding Atlanta. She is married to Tom Rosenberg and they have one child, Daniel.

 


Barbara Dave has been associated with her family's Commercial Realty Company for over 24 years in Knoxville, TN.  Barbara majored in Business at the University of Tennessee. Her community involvement in Knoxville includes: Knoxville Art Museum Guild Board; the Boards of Hadassah, Temple Sisterhood and the Jewish Community Center. She was also active on various committees for the Knoxville Symphony and served on the solicitation board for the City of Knoxville.  During the winter months, she spends time with Art and Sculpture classes in Naples, Florida. In Naples, she was written up in a small article in the Naples "Neapolitan 50 plus" magazine about her art.  Barbara also continues activities with Hadassah while in Florida. She served on the Holocaust Museum of SW Florida Welcoming Committee. In Asheville, she serves on the Beth HaTephila membership committee. Her husband is Jerry Dave, a native of Asheville who is with Dave Steel Company. Together they have eleven grandchildren. 


Kerry A. Friedman, 2010 Campaign Co-Chair
Kerry is an Asheville native, UNC-Chapel Hill, Phi Beta Kappa, BA in 1976, UNC School of Law, JD in 1980. Partner in Patla Straus Robinson & Moore, PA, with the firm since 1980. Specialize in Business Law. Past Board involvement: JCC (Past President), CBHT (Past President), Pisgah Legal Services (Past President), Legal Services of NC (Past President), 28th Judicial District Bar (Past Secretary-Treasurer), YMCA of WNC (Past Treasurer), Meals on Wheels, Caring for Children, Leadership Asheville. Current Board involvement: Chair of United Way of Asheville-Buncombe County, Chair of CarePartners Health Services, on Board of Community Foundation of WNC, Finance Committee of YMCA of WNC, WNCJF, JCC Foundation and CBHT Endowment Trustee. Married since 1984 to Anna S. Friedman, 2 daughters, Sarah just graduated from UNC-Asheville with BA in Spanish and History; Rebecca a rising senior at Appalachian State University, studying Business/Public Relations. 

 


Jeffrey Goldstein, 2010 Campaign Co-Chair is a board-certified opthamologist with additional sub-specialty training in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Eyelid and Facial Surgery. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, and he received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Goldstein is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an elite group of fewer than 500 oculoplastic surgeons nationwide. He is an Assistant Consulting Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center and the Asheville VA Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein has been with Asheville Eye Associates since 2000.

Dr. Goldstein and his wife enjoy traveling, hiking and gardening. They selected Asheville as their home to be near family. They have three children. 

  Derek Hoffman is co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of Wall St Cheat Sheet, a national subscription-based economic newsletter. He has handled media investment and tactical strategy planning for Procter & Gamble and Gillette's national asset portfolio. Derek has also worked in private wealth management for Morgan Stanley. He graduated early from the University of Michigan’s world class economics department. When he's not serving the community or building up the Wall St Cheat Sheet media venture, you can find him on a basketball court or walking around town with his new dog, Lola.

 

Karen North Shuffler, Chief Learning Officer (CLO) of North Consulting Group Inc., is an internationally recognized corporate trainer with a reputation as a dynamic speaker and trainer. She has been a consultant to over 50 companies on four continents. Karen was responsible for sales & sales management training at AT&T and later created the worldwide sales process for Intel. She received her BA from Emerson College and holds an MA and MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is also a graduate of the Executive Progam at Babson College. For several years she was the Chair of Boca West Women's Division of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

Karen and her husband David Shuffler moved to Asheville from New Jersey in May 2009 and immediately became involved in Jewish activities. When they are not working, they enjoy hiking, exploring Asheville and trying new restaurants.
